CSL
Graduate School (SPs) ITB provides a Citation Style Language (CSL) which can be used in supported reference manager software, to format references and bibliography in conformance with SPs ITB guidelines for master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation.
SPs ITB provides guidance on using a CSL with the following software:
Microsoft Word 2010/2013/2016 and Zotero App, for Windows and MacOs
CSL is an open and widely supported format, so it can be used with other software, such as LibreOffice, Mendeley and Linux-based operating systems such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Refer to your reference manager documentation for using this CSL in the software you are using, or you can contribute to this guide by sending GitHub pull request.
A. Preparation
- Make sure you have installed Microsoft Office 2010/2013/2016.
- Install the Zotero App from https://www.zotero.org/
- Run Zotero
- Register or login to a Zotero account so you can easily store and sync your references.
- Make sure you can see the Zotero tab in Microsoft Word.
- Install the style of the Bandung Institute of Technology – Graduate School, by:
a. In Zotero, click Edit > Preferences…
b. Click Get additional styles….
c. Search “institut teknologi bandung”
d. Click Institut Teknologi Bandung – Sekolah Pascasarjana
e. Click OK - Happy! You are now ready to collect documents, add citations, and add the bibliography to your work.
B. Collecting Documents
Before you can add citations, you need to first collect documents in Zotero. There are many ways to add documents, this guide will describe the common ones:
- Adding a PDF file containing the paper
- Using the Browser Connector add-on (recommended)
- Add manual (last resort)
- Collecting Documents from PDF files
When you already have PDF files of the papers you want, simply drag-and-drop them into the Zotero application.
Alternatively, you can also click Add > Store Copy of File
- Collecting Documents with Browser Connector add-on (recommended)
Browser Connector is the most convenient way to add documents, and when a PDF file is available it will also be downloaded automatically.- Install Zotero Browser Connector for your browser.
- Once the Browser Connector add-on is installed, log into your Zotero.org account.
- Visit Google Search, IEEE Xplore, or your favorite journal/proceeding website. To import documents from the website you are currently viewing, click Save to Zotero on your browser toolbar.
- Click Save
- When you're done importing from the web: Open the Zotero app, click Sync with zotero.org so you can use the documents right away. The imported documents will appear in the Zotero app after the sync is complete.
- Install Zotero Browser Connector for your browser.
- Collecting Documents Manually
Sometimes the practical and easy way doesn't work well, or you just want to add the document manually.- In the Zotero app, click Add > (document type). Some commonly used types are Conference Proceedings and Journal Articles.
- In the Info pane, enter the document details.
See the Document Types and Supported Fields section for further information on how to select a document type and fill in the fields correctly.

C. Include Citation
- Create a Word document for your thesis or dissertation using template from SPs ITB.
- On the Zotero ribbon tab, click Document Preferences.
a. In Citation Style, select Bandung Institute of Technology – Graduate School.
b. In Language, select Indonesian or English based on the language used in your thesis or dissertation. Then click OK. - Position the cursor where you want to include citations, click Zotero > Add/Edit Citation.
Type in the document's keywords (author, title, year, etc.) and then double-click or press Enter.
D. Creating a Bibliography
Position the cursor under the Bibliography heading, click Zotero > Add/Edit Bibliography.
The bibliography will be added according to the syntax of SPs ITB.
Important: You still need to make adjustments accordingly Thesis and Dissertation Guidelines of SPs ITB, because the following formatting is not controlled by CSL:
- Font and font size changed to Times New Roman size 12 points
- Paragraph justification changed to justified
